Cleaning out your closet can be a difficult task. I don’t know what it is, but I have a hard time letting things go. I’ve always been the type of person to fish for a reason to keep that shirt in the back of my closet that I haven’t touched in five years. However, when I moved out of my parents house, I realized that I couldn’t be the type of person to hold onto things forever.
Since then, I find myself going through my wardrobe every so often to refresh it and get rid of things that either no longer fit or that I haven’t worn in quite some time. There’s really just a great feeling that comes along with having a cleaned out closet with room for some new additions.
Here are a few tips to help making cleaning out your closet a bit easier!
1. Try things on
This first tip may be common sense, but it’s a good place to start. Whenever I clean out my closet, I begin by trying things that I maybe haven’t worn in a bit on. Getting rid of the things that don’t fit anymore is a great place to start, and quite frankly, it’s probably the easiest of the decisions to make when cleaning. I mean, why keep a pair of pants that don’t fit you? They’re of no use just sitting in your drawer or closet.
2. Organize things by color
I’ve noticed that sometimes when I organize things by color I realize that I own duplicates of pieces that are extremely similar. Unless it’s something that I really love and wear extremely often, like leggings for example, I don’t think there is a reason to own more than one of a thing — again, making for an easy decision to get rid of some things.
3. Turn your hangers around
I’ve read this tip so many times, and I had to add it because it’s actually a really good idea. At the beginning of the season (or year, depending on how often you change out what is in a wardrobe), flip all of your hangers around, so that they are hanging the opposite way of how they normally hang. Then, every time you wear something, put it back on the hanger the normal way. Then at the end of the season, or year, anything still on a backwards hanger can go.
4. Use the Marie Kondo method
If you haven’t heard, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” is a HUGE trend right now. If you haven’t seen her Netflix show, or read her book, you definitely should! To basically put it into a quick summary, Marie Kondo goes into the homes of people who need some assistance organizing their home. She shows these people how to fold their clothes to be able to make the most of their drawer space, and she also has each person go through their belongings and only keep the things that she says “spark joy.” So what I’m saying is, it can’t hurt to go through all of the belongings in your closet, throw them all on your bed, and go through each piece one by one and find what sparks joy!
5. Use shelves and bins to your advantage
You’d be surprised with how much more storage you will end up with by utilizing different shelves and bins. You can always find cute closet storage at places like The Container Store, or Ikea that will give you so much more storage than you would have with just the hanging rod in your closet!
6. Sell your clothes on Poshmark
Once all is said and done, try selling the clothes you’re getting rid of on Poshmark! You never know who may fall in love with the clothes you have fallen out of love with! Not only do you get to clean out your closet, but you get to put a little extra cash in your pocket as well! If you’d like to see what is listed on my Poshmark, check it out HERE!
