I think it’s safe to say we all have a cute little black dress in our closet, and if you’re anything like me, you wear the hell out of it. There truly is never a wrong time for a simple black dress.
However, sometimes it can get old — styling it the same way all the time. I like to get the most out of my outfits without over-wearing them. Therefore, I am constantly thinking of different ways to style the pieces I already own, and styling a black dress is so simple!
You can do so much with your black dress, and I’m going to show you just a few of my favorite ways to style mine! While some of my pieces are from last season or before, I’ve linked to similar (and very affordable) pieces that you can get to achieve the same look!
First things first, if you don’t have a black dress — you’ll need to get one! The dress I am wearing in the photos is from Express, it’s a year or so old, but nevertheless is still great, and tons of similar dresses are still available! However, if you’re looking to shop on a budget, SHEIN has tons of different style black dresses, and they are so cheap your wallet definitely won’t mind.
This first style is perfect for fall, when the weather is so up and down that one second you’re hot and the next you’re cold. Plus, everyone loves a good flannel! You really can’t go wrong with dressing your black dress down with a flannel around the waist, it gives the look a casual feel to it. Any color flannel will go perfectly with this look, but if you’re looking for a red and black button up like I have, Jane has one extremely similar!
This next style is great for a casual look, and can also be worn in the fall! Chambray shirts have been totally in style over the past few years, and they’re great for so many different looks! This look also gives you the option to wear the shirt as a cover up if it is chilly, or tie it around your waist when you begin to warm up. Pair this look with a pair of white (red would be cute too) flats and you’re ready to go! If you need a Chambray top to pair with your dress, Jane has one that is super cute!
If you’re looking for something a bit more dressy, you could always dress it up with a cute blazer or jacket! Because it is a black dress, literally any color will work for this look! I happened to have a white jacket on hand, but I think pink would look great with this look! If you’re looking for a white blazer, SHEIN has a cute plain white blazer, and an even cuter plaid black and white blazer! If you want to try out this look with a pink blazer, Jane has a perfect pale pink blazer!
Here is another dressy look, without overdoing it, and is also super simple to put together! If the weather is still to warm for a jacket or sweater, you could always style your dress with a simple scarf! By adding a scarf, you’re adding a pop of color to your look! Grant it, my scarf is white — but, I think it would look super cute with a printed scarf! Jane has tons of cute scarves, including a net infinity scarfthat comes in tons of colors, and an adorable plaid infinity scarf!
Lastly, this look is great for colder weather. When it comes to cardigans, there are just endless options! It’s a pretty safe bet that a cardigan and dress is an appropriate outfit for just about any occasion — work, casual, party, you name it. Of course any cardigan will fit perfectly with this look, but if you’re looking for some inspiration — SHEIN has an adorable printed cardigan with tassels, or you can try Jane’s waffle knit cardiganthat comes in tons of colors (I particularly like the mustard color).
You really can’t go wrong with how you style your black dress. How do you style yours? Leave pictures so I can check them out!
