6 home organization projects to pass the time

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all hanging onto your sanity while quarantined in your homes. Today I am offering up different home organization projects to help you get done some spring cleaning while you’re cooped up inside.

Maybe it’s just me, but as I’m spending more time inside my house, I’m noticing things that can use some major love and that could easily be organized to optimize the space in our home.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need massive closets and huge mansion-sized houses to find room to store and organize your things. This is something that I have recently come to terms with (though I am still yearning for my eventual walk-in closet and pantry in my next home). That is why I wanted to share some of these home organization projects and tips with you all!

Clean Out & Organize Your Fridge

The refrigerator is a place that is often forgotten about when it comes to cleaning the home. There is no better time to clean and organize your fridge than right before you get some new groceries. This will allow you to get rid of anything that may have expired unbeknownst to you, and making way for the new groceries you’re about to buy. It’s also a good idea to keep in mind when you’re organizing your fridge and making way for the new stuff, to keep the stuff closest to expiration near the front, that way you are able to use up those products before they expire and before you open up something new that may not expire for quite some time. Having a clean, organized refrigerator will help you see what you have at your disposal when it comes time to cook!

Clean Out & Organize Your Pantry and Cabinets

As you clean out your fridge, you might as well clean out and organize your pantry and cabinets as well! Starting with your food pantry, you’d be surprised and what you’d find in the deep dark depths of your cabinets that you may have totally forgotten about that is so horrendously outdated – it’s okay, we’ve all been there. You can also organize your pantry shelves by getting dividers to be able to display your items on two levels, and if you can’t do that, you can even stack your canned goods to be able to see more at once, believe me, it is totally helpful.

Clean Out & Organize Your Makeup, Skincare and Haircare products

If you’re anything like me, this is a BIG one! Makeup, skincare and haircare products can build up fast, without you even knowing it sometimes. When you’re subscribed to different beauty subscription boxes, or maybe receive free gifts with purchases among other things you’ll end up with many different products, some of which you may never open! It’s a good idea to go through these products, check for expiration dates (to figure out how to do that, check out THIS article), check for wear and tear and sort into piles what you want to keep, what is no longer good and what you’d like to donate or give away. If you have products that are still good but you know you won’t use, try donating them to a women’s shelter! With the products you are left with, try getting some drawer dividers to organize products by different function!

Go Through Any Old Papers You May Have Lying Around

Maybe it’s just in my house, or maybe it’s in all houses, but I feel like papers pile up FAST. Especially mail and bills. This is the perfect opportunity to go through all those papers you may have lying around and get rid of any junk mail or papers you no longer need, and take the papers you do need and sort them in a filing cabinet. If you want to reduce the amount of papers you end up with in your home, sign up for electronic statements and automatic bill pay online to stop those paper bills from piling up and ultimately getting lost!

Clean Out Those Closets!

Whether it’s your clothes closet, a cleaning closet or even just a linen closet, closets can easily become a messy disaster. Aside from the fact that being stuck inside makes for the perfect time to clean them, the change of the seasons also makes for the perfect time! Go through each of these closets and get rid of anything that no longer serves a purpose for you. A good rule of thumb, especially when it comes to your clothes closet, is if you can’t remember the last time you used it, chances are the next time you use it isn’t anytime in the near future… or far future for that matter. Once you’ve purged your closets of the things you no longer want or need, come up with a system to organize your closets, whether you do it by color coding or buying small containers to store your things in. There are many ways to organize your closets. When it comes to closet organization, I love to find my inspiration from The Home Edit, especially their Instagram page – if you ever need some motivation to organize in the form of visually appealing images, this is the place to go!

Clean Up A Workspace To Help You Work From Home

If you have a job that is currently allowing or requiring you to work from home, a nice, clean workspace can help you out in more ways than one! It’ll give you a space to be able to lay out your work should you need to, it’ll also help you to be more productive and help keep you away from different distractions. Even if it is just a small table in a quiet room, separating a space that you can dedicate to working will help you with your productivity as well as keeping home and work separate, which I know can be difficult to do when working from home sometimes.

Clean Up Your Digital Spaces

This last one is one that we may not think about when it comes to cleaning up and organizing, but it is to clean up your digital spaces! This means your phone, your smart tv, your laptop, your tablet, anything digital that can aggregate a mess! The best way to clean up your digital files is to organize things by folder, back up important documents to the cloud, and get rid of anything you no longer need!

I hope these home organization projects and tips are things that you find you are capable of doing and are able to get done! I don’t know about anyone else, but for me a clean and organized home is a happy one! (And relaxing in a clean home is just that much more satisfying!)

How have you been spending your time while stuck inside? If you have any more home organization projects or tips, share them in the comments!
